Nir Stav

Mr. Nir Stav is serving as the Principal Director of Infrastructure since October 2023.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Stav served as the head of the Israel Meteorological Service (IMS) and the Israeli Permanent Representative to WMO for eight years. In this role, he established a National Climate Forecasting Centre, producing high-resolution climate projections for the Mediterranean and Middle-East; established a joint Flood Forecasting Centre with the Water Authority of Israel; established tri-lateral collaboration agreement IMS with the Cyprus Meteorological Department (DoM) and the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS); chaired the Steering Committee of the South-East Europe Multi-Hazard Early Warning Advisory System (SEE-MHEWS) and chaired the Advisory Committee of Co-operating States (ACCS) of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).  In his service in the IMS Mr. Stav has also contributed to the reform of the Meteorological Services to Aviation in Israel, to the establishment of a National Early Warning information system and to the development of high-resolution ensemble prediction system to the Eastern Mediterranean.  

Prior to his service in the IMS, Mr. Stav served for a decade as an Educator in the Tel-Aviv Centre of Science Education (HEMDA), working with high schools and teachers to improve the teaching of physical sciences and utilization of new technologies in the classroom and also headed the Israeli Air Force forecasting centre.   

Mr. Stav holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Physics from Tel-Aviv University, as well as a Master`s degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School.
