Our Mandate
WMO facilitates the advancement of Earth system sciences – meteorological, climatological, hydrological and environmental sciences – for a safer, better future for all.
WMO drives international cooperation to improve meteorological, climatological, hydrological and environmental observations, and the exchange of such data, and research and to develop related services to protect lives and property from natural hazards and to contribute to socioeconomic well-being. Towards this goal, WMO advocates for an Earth system approach that encompasses the planet’s weather-, climate- and water-related cycles, irrespective of national boundaries.
WMO Vision
By 2030, WMO envisions a world where all nations, especially the most vulnerable, are more resilient to the socioeconomic consequences of extreme weather, climate, water and other environmental events; and underpin their sustainable development through the best possible environmental services, whether over land, at sea or in the air.
WMO Mission
WMO facilitates worldwide cooperation on monitoring and predicting changes in weather, climate, water and other environmental conditions through the creation of standards and applications; the exchange of data, information and services; training and the promotion of research.
WMO Strategic Plan 2024-2027
WMO strategic and operational planning is built on the results-based management concept, established by the Fifteenth World Meteorological Congress as fundamental for managing the planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring and reporting of programmatic work.
The WMO Strategic Plan 2024-2027 articulates the high-level vision, mission, core values and overarching priorities of the Organization. It outlines a set of long-term goals and strategic objectives with a 2030 horizon as well as identifies areas of focus for the 2024-2027 financial period.
