2025: International Year of Glacier Preservation

The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Preservation. This year will feature events, new data releases, and key announcements focused on glaciers. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UNESCO are organizing a special online briefing session designed for media professionals.

Mandatory registration via the online form by 15 January.

This event aims to provide media professionals with vital knowledge and insights to report effectively on:

  • The impacts of climate change on glaciers,
  • Foundational glacial science concepts, and
  • The societal, ecological, and economic implications of glacier melt.

By equipping participants with accurate information, the session seeks to foster informed public discourse on this critical issue.

Event Highlights

The briefing includes a 40-minute presentation by leading glacier experts - Prof. John Pomeroy, Isabelle Gärtner, Neera Pradhan, and others - followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Topics to be covered:

  • Common misconceptions about glaciers
  • Glacier formation and melting:
    • The link between snowfall, multi-year snow cover, glacier ice, and frozen ground
    • The role of increasing temperatures at high elevations, rainfall, and warming ground surfaces
  • Why are not all glaciers melting?
    • Reasons why some glaciers are growing while others shrink
    • Links between mountain/glacier ice and polar ice
  • Consequences of glacier melt on lowlands:
    • Short-term hazards and long-term water insecurity

Who should attend?

This online event is exclusively for journalists and media representatives. Link to the session will be sent after registration.
