Richard Engelen

Richard Engelen received his PhD in Atmospheric Science from Utrecht University, The Netherlands, in 1996. He worked between 1996 and 2002 at the Atmospheric Science Department of Colorado State University, Fort Collins, USA, on remote sensing of water vapour, clouds and CO2.

Some of this work was linked to the preparation of the CloudSat mission. From 2002 onwards, he has been employed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and has been part of the team that developed the pre-operational services that led to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) in 2015. He is now Deputy Director of CAMS, closely supporting the Director of CAMS with the scientific and technical management of the CAMS programme. In this capacity, he is responsible for coordinating ECMWF’s activities in support of the development of a European operational observing capacity to monitor anthropogenic greenhouse emissions. Dr. Engelen is the author or co-author of over 80 publications in refereed journals. His main interests are focused on data assimilation and modelling of atmospheric composition. He has been a member of the Sentinel-4/-5 and Sentinel-5p Mission Advisory Groups and is a member of the CO2M Mission Advisory Group. He is also currently a member of the CO2 Monitoring Task Force from the European Commission.
