MAZU-Djibouti 2.0 delivered to the Republic of Djibouti

17 July 2026

On July 17, during the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) Meteorological Forum, MAZU-Djibouti 2.0 was officially handed over to the Republic of Djibouti. The ceremony was witnessed by Dr. CHEN Zhenlin, Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and Ismail Nour, Director-General of Djibouti National Meteorological Agency.

In July 2025, CMA donated an Application Scenario of Urban Multi-hazard Early Warning to Djibouti, which was officially put into operation that December. If MAZU-Djibouti 1.0 can be likened to a highly capable "meteorological brain", MAZU-Djibouti 2.0 adds both the "eyes" for observation and the "hands" for autonomous alerting.

At its core is a compact monitoring and alerting terminal equipped with integrated meteorological chips and forecasting models, which works in tandem with the MAZU- Djibouti 1.0 already deployed in Djibouti. This creates a full-coverage “sensing–forecasting–alerting” ecosystem that spans the entire chain, from space-based and aerial monitoring to ground-based observation, modeling, chip-level processing, and terminal delivery. Key technical upgrades include an improved forecast resolution of 3 kilometers (down from 9 kilometers), a 3-day forecast lead time, and a 6-hour update cycle. The system now features a one-click alert function and real-time interactive capabilities, enabling more precise predictions of extreme weather events, then provides greater operational support for port activities and enhanced safety for local communities.
