The Infrastructure Department supports the WMO Infrastructure Commission, which responds to WMO’s core purpose of promoting an “integrated international system for the observation, collection, processing, and dissemination of meteorological, hydrological, and related data and products” for weather, climate, and water applications.
This is achieved through three globally coordinated component systems:
All three systems take an Earth System approach, considering hydrology, the ocean, the cryosphere, and polar domains, as well as key connections to regional and Member-level action, including capacity development.
The department also hosts the Secretariat of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW), and the WMO Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W).
It contributes to the Secretariat of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and serves as the Technical Authority for the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF).
Nir Stav is the Principal Director of the Infrastructure Department.
Albert Fischer is the Director of the WIGOS Division, Peiliang Shi is the Director of the Data and Prediction Division, and Gianpaolo Balsamo is the Director of the Climate Infrastructure Division.
