WMO is delighted to announce the winners of its biggest and most successful ever photo competition, which attracted nearly 1,500 outstanding images from all over the world.

Fourteen photographs were selected as winners, and an additional 12 as “honourable mentions,” based on photographic and technical merit, geographical balance and relevance to WMO’s mandate as the UN’s authoritative voice on weather, climate and water. The results also took into account the popularity of each photo on WMO Instagram and Facebook channels – one of the highlights of WMO’s social media activities.

The jury of WMO Secretariat and external experts faced an incredibly difficult selection process because so many of the photos are absolutely stunning. Jury members were left in awe at the beauty of the photos – and the power of nature. For the jury, every single photo is a winner!

The successful photographs will be featured in the 2023 WMO calendar – which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the organization – as well as all WMO social media channels and website. UN partners,  including the main UN News feed and the UN Secretary-General’s team, also make extensive use of the photographs as many illustrate extreme weather, climate change and sustainable development issues.

Since its launch in 2014, the WMO calendar competition has gained in stature and recognition – and the quality of the photographs reflects this. Many of the finalists and winners are featured on local TV and news outlets.

And above all, we thank all the photographers who submitted their amazing photos and to everyone who helped vote and make this competition such a success.

Feast your eyes!
