In an age of constant volatility-from climate change and cyber threats to economic shocks-resilience is no longer a luxury, but a business necessity. To meet this challenge, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CCRO) Network have developed the Resilience Maturity Assessment (ReMA) tool: a new, comprehensive self-assessment framework that supports organizations of all sizes in evaluating and enhancing their resilience.

What does the ReMA tool do?

The ReMA tool enables microenterprises, small businesses, and multinational corporations alike to assess their capacity to absorb, adapt, and recover from a wide range of disruptions. It offers clear, actionable feedback across six essential dimensions of resilience:

  1. Policy and Governance - Evaluates how formalized and integrated the organization's resilience policy and methodology are.
  2. Leadership and Culture - Measures leadership commitment and the level of awareness and practice of resilience throughout the organization.
  3. Organization - Assesses role clarity, cross-functional coordination, and alignment with enterprise-wide risk strategies.
  4. Capacity - Gauges the availability, effectiveness, and limitations of resources to respond to crises.
  5. Operating model - Reviews the integration of resilience into day-to-day business activities and planning.
  6. Value chain - Looks at supplier resilience and the ability to meet business objectives during disruption.

These pillars help businesses identify strengths and pinpoint gaps, while the four resilience maturity levels provide a benchmarking system to guide continuous improvement. Organizations can determine where they currently stand on the resilience spectrum-and where they aspire to be-depending on their size, sector, and strategic priorities.

Why does this matter?

Enterprise resilience is not only critical for operational continuity and long-term performance-it also plays a fundamental role in supporting communities and systems beyond the private sector. By strengthening internal capabilities, businesses contribute to broader societal efforts to reduce disaster risk and build a sustainable future.

Developed through collaboration

The ReMA tool is the result of close cooperation between UNDRR and members of the CCRO Network. It incorporates feedback and insights gathered through extensive consultations with public and private sector stakeholders, ensuring the tool is scalable, relevant, and accessible across industries.

Interest in the ReMA tool continues to grow. It was introduced to a broader audience during a recent session at the Risk-!n Conference, where UNDRR's Dr. Abhilash Panda and Syngenta's Laurent Giezendanner, speaking on behalf of the CCRO Network, shared how the tool can shape stronger risk management practices across the private sector. Feedback gathered during the Risk-!n session, including calls to integrate local community engagement and human resilience dimensions, will inform future enhancements to the tool.

Looking ahead

The official launch of ReMA will take place at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), marking a key milestone in the CCRO Network efforts effort to shape tools and solutions that are scalable, data-driven, and inclusive.
