50th Anniversary of the Agreement for the Establishment of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization

09 November 2023

The Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO) celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Agreement for the Establishment of the CMO, signed on 19 October 1973 in Basseterre, St Kitts, by hosting a webinar entitled "The Early Years of Meteorology in the English-Speaking Caribbean."  The CMO, a specialized institution of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), originated from the British Caribbean Meteorological Service that was established in 1951.

The provision of meteorological and hydrometeorological services is very unique because it cannot be done without major cooperation and collaboration among all nations, large and small, on the regional and global levels, a primary motivator for the establishment of the CMO.  The webinar was a unique and fascinating opportunity to delve into the evolution of meteorology in the English-speaking Caribbean "in the early days", as told by three of the pioneers: Dr. John Lee, Dr. Michael Garstang and Dr. Kenrick Leslie.  A recording of the webinar is available on the Caribbean Community YouTube channel
