Russian meteorologists have accumulated a large experience in hydrometeorological provision of large-scale international sports competitions. To do this, it is important to have modern technology for monitoring the weather, environmental situation, forecasting, as well as understanding the features of certain competitions and the requirements of the sports organizers

The tournament runs from 14 June to 15 July at 12 venues in 11 host cities.  Moscow (2 venues), Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd and Sochi.

Given the size of the country, the matches will be played in cities hundreds of kilometers apart, with a great diversity of weather.

For instance, the average daily maximum temperature in Moscow in June is 21.7°C and in July 23.1°C, with a respective total 75 mm and 94 mm of rainfall,  according to WMO’s World Weather Information Service.

In the South, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don have an average June maximum temperature of 26.9°C and July of 29.2°C, with less than 60 mm of average rainfall.

"Despite the modern equipment of the constructed and reconstructed arenas, in many cases the matches remain outdoor events. Not all spectators and athletes are covered in case of bad weather. Many spectators are not at the stadiums with covered stands, but watch the matches on specially installed large screens, being outdoors for a long time. Many football fans travel long distances between cities. All this makes it necessary to inform timely about weather conditions of athletes, fans, organizers of competitions and numerous regional providing services," says Roshydromet.
