Caterina Tassone

Caterina has been working at GCOS since 2016 as the scientific officer supporting the GCOS Atmospheric Observation Panel for Climate (AOPC). She is the head of GCOS since 2023. Caterina provides support to the activities related to climate monitoring for the atmosphere, which includes identifying gaps in the observing system, proposing remedy actions, curating the Essential Climate Variables. She also provides support to the implementation of the GCOS Reference Upper-Air Network and the establishment of the GCOS Surface Reference Network. Her duties within GCOS include also coordinating the GCOS Secretariat and ensuring the liaison of GCOS to WMO and to the other sponsors.

Caterina holds a degree and master’s in physics from the University of Milan (Italy) and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Copenhagen, (Denmark). Prior to GCOS, she has worked at NOAA and NASA (USA) in the development of Boundary Layer parameterization for mesoscale models.
