Chantal Line Carpentier

Dr. Carpentier is Head, Trade, Environment, Climate change, and Sustainable Development Branch of UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC) following 8 years as Chief of UNCTAD New York Office of the Secretary General.

Since 2023, she chairs the UN InterAgency Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) as part of her advocacy for new economic models for sustainable development, and the critical role of MSMEs and entrepreneurs, in the economic empowerment of women, and achievement of resilient, inclusive, digitally connected and sustainable economies and communities. 

Prior to UNCTAD, she served as Major Groups (of non-State actors) Coordinator in the SDGs negotiations and the UN Rio+20 Conference at DESA, Focal point for food security and sustainable agriculture and sustainable consumption and production at DESA’s Commission on Sustainable Development, Head of the North American Free Trade Agreement Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s of the NAFTA, Agro-environmental policy analyst for Winrock International and post-Doctoral fellow/Brazil office manager for the International Food Policy Research Institute(IFPRI). 

She is a 2006 Yale World Fellow and a United Nations Environment Programme Who’s Who’s of Women and the Environment. She obtained a PhD. in Agro-Environmental Economics from Virginia Technology and MSc. and BSc. from McGill University and is an ironman and ultramarathoner.
