Implementation of Competencies in Climate Services

04 avril 2024

The first Regional Workshop for Implementation of Competencies in Climate Services took place in Bahrain from 21–25 January.

The WMO Strategic Plan 2024–2027, adopted by the World Meteorological Congress in June 2023, sets the directions and priorities to guide the activities in the coming years and looks ahead to 2030 to enable all Members to improve their information, products and services. It calls for further development, and maintenance, of the core WMO competency frameworks that are essential for the sustainability of high-quality service delivery. The first Regional Workshop for Implementation of Competencies in Climate Services, delivered in Bahrain from 21–25 January, responds to this call.

The workshop addressed the core competencies for the provision of climate services and provided guidance on competency implementation, starting with the drafting of job descriptions based on competency needs. The curriculum also covered the process for identifying training needs and basic elements related to competency assessment. Climate services were the focus but the workshop also looked at different branches of meteorology and hydrology, based on the results of the Survey on the Status of Human Resources (WMO 1305), which highlighted the Members’ need for support in implementing the WMO Competency Frameworks.

The workshop, organized by the WMO Education and Training Office and Climate Services Branch, attracted 24 participants, representing 18 Members of WMO Region II (Asia). The Bahrain Meteorological Directorate and WMO Regional Office for the Arab Region co-hosted the event.
