From Science to Operations: Experiences in Flood Forecasting and Warning Services
Switzerland
Please join us for the next Technical Coordination Initiative (TCI) Lunchtime Learning Session, From Science to Operations: Experiences in Flood Forecasting and Warning Services, featuring experts from the University of Iowa, Rutgers University, Columbia University, and the Tethys Geoscience Foundation.
Operational flood forecasting and warning services are essential for enabling authorities and communities to anticipate and act ahead of floods. However, translating scientific advances and forecasting technologies into sustainable operational services remains a challenge, particularly in data-scarce and resource-constrained environments.
Over the past several years, the University of Iowa, Rutgers University, Columbia University, and the Tethys Geoscience Foundation have worked with WMO to support the development and operationalization of flood forecasting systems and strengthen early warning services in more than 20 countries. This collaboration has been advanced through initiatives such as the CREWS West Africa project, the CREWS Cuba project, and the Early Warning Systems for Floods (EWS-F) project.
During this TCI session, the speakers will share practical experiences, key achievements, and lessons learned in moving from science to operational flood forecasting and warning services. The discussion will highlight innovative approaches, technology and knowledge transfer, national capacity strengthening, and opportunities to replicate and scale successful approaches.
