Webinar - Cascading Flood Risks in Mountain Regions: Early Warning, Governance and Resilience

Floods and associated cascading hazards are becoming increasingly complex, particularly in high-mountain and transboundary river basins where rapidly changing environmental conditions can amplify risks for communities, infrastructure and economies downstream. Their impacts do not respect administrative boundaries, while critical meteorological, hydrological, and cryospheric information is often generated and managed by different countries and institutions. 

Recent tragic flood events, including those experienced in Nepal and Switzerland, have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen understanding, monitoring, forecasting, early warning and preparedness for hazards in mountain environments. 

The webinar will take a broad international perspective on high-mountain floods and cascading risks. It will explore what can be done to better anticipate and prevent hazards from becoming disasters, including through improved monitoring systems, risk assessments, hydrometeorological and cryospheric data and information, early warnings, preparedness and anticipatory measures. The webinar aims to share lessons from recent high-mountain flood events and promote stronger national and transboundary cooperation to better understand, monitor, forecast and communicate flood and cascading risks, and to support timely preparedness and anticipatory action.
