IG3IS Webinar Series 2026: Halogenated greenhouse gases monitoring: progress, challenges, and applications in support of policy makers
Speaker:
Bo Yao, Professor, Deputy Director of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Fudan University, China.
Overview:
Halogenated greenhouse gases include ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), both of which play an important role in ozone depletion and climate change. The atmospheric mixing ratio of halogenated greenhouse gases is extremely low, at ppt levels; it is a great challenge to monitor them precisely. This talk will cover techniques for measuring ambient halogenated greenhouse gases through in-situ measurements and flask sampling, QA/QC procedures, calibration, and the recent expansion of the Chinese monitoring network by developing a new monitoring system. Additionally, this talk will provide examples of how measurements can help quantify previously unknown or underestimated emissions and support policymakers in regulating halogenated greenhouse gases.
