The Future of WMO - A Discussion with the Secretary-General of WMO
Climate services are the provision and use of climate information to help individuals and organizations make climate-smart decisions. With the ever-increasing demand from all social and economic sectors, climate services can only be sustainable and effective if all players along the climate-service value chain are involved and mutually supported. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has actively promoted engagement among public, private, and academic sectors, as agreed to in the 2019 Geneva Declaration.
In this townhall session, the WMO's new Secretary-General will speak with a panel of representatives from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), private companies, academia, and NGOs about:
- how to leverage the strength of different sectors and stakeholders to facilitate the transformation of climate science and knowledge into practical and productive climate services for societal benefit;
- what are the key obstacles in developing and forging effective and mutually beneficial engagement in climate services;
- what strategies should be taken at global, regional, and national levels to increase the institutional and technological capacities of NMHSs to support the growing needs for basic climate data and products on which better and more accessible climate services can be developed and delivered
After keynote presentations, a townhall Q&A session will allow the audience to engage the WMO and the panelists.
