WIS and WIGOS implementation through the ClimSA Programme
WIS and WIGOS implementation in Kenya
From 25 to 27 April, a mission to Kenya allowed WMO to provide technical assistance and guidance to the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) for the implementation of WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) including the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON), and WMO Information System (WIS). Activities undertaken during the mission included:
- The review national plans related to KMD’s observing strategy;
- The updating of OSCAR/Surface metadata;
- The assessment of the operational status of their observing network and development of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Plan;
- Hands on training on WIGOS tools for KMD staff;
- The Implementation of a test phase of WIS 2.0; and
- The review of the operations of the Regional WIGOS Centre (RWC) and Regional Instrument Centre (RIC) where recommendations were provided for further improvement.
From 10 to 11 May, WMO led a workshop on Data Exchange for Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member State Climate Experts, in Luanda, Angola. The workshop focused on the requirements and benefits of international data exchange, while highlighting the importance of developing national data policies that are aligned with the WMO unified data policy. WIGOS, GBON, WIGOS tools, WIS and WIS 2.0 were all introduced, and the importance of collaboration with the WMO Secretariat, Regional WIGOS Centres and Regional Instrument Centres for implementation was highlighted.
WIGOS and WIS Implementation in Angola
From 12 to 17 May, WMO supported the National Meteorological and Geophysics Service of Angola (INAMET) on, WIGOS, WIS and GBON implementation. During this mission, national observing networks capabilities and the technical infrastructure of INAMET was reviewed and assessed with the conclusion that INAMET has modern and powerful infrastructure for observations and data exchange. Further undertakings included:
- The review of the status of metadata registration in OSCAR/Surface and quality monitoring issues in WDQMS, and provision of recommended actions to solve the issues;
- A training on WIGOS Tools and WIGOS Station Identifiers which included hands-on practical exercises; and
- The provision of recommendations to develop and implement a strategy for observations and data exchange in alignment with the INAMET global strategic plan and in cooperation with the WMO Secretariat, RWC Southern Africa and RTH Pretoria (South Africa).
