High-level launch of the report on the State of the Global Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023

The State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023 report will be launched at virtual event on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. UTC, 8:00 a.m. Costa Rica, 9:00 a.m. Peru, 10:00 a.m. Barbados and Paraguay, 11:00 a.m. Brazil.

The launch of the report will be a virtual event on ZOOM (Register here) and will have English/Spanish interpretation.

The Report, the fourth in an annual series that began in 2020, has been prepared in collaboration with more than 30 National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, the Regional Climate Centers of the region, as well as FAO, PAHO, and more than 15 research institutions.  

The main lead authors of the report are Dr. José Marengo (CEMADEN, Brazil) and Mr. Jorge Vázquez (Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico). WMO has coordinated the Climate Policy and Action section and Member countries have provided inputs to the Report.

The online event will have three sectionsparts: keynote speeches, presentation of the report'’s findings by the lead authors and a panel discussion with representatives from different sectors. 

Keynote addresses will be given by:

  • Professor Celeste Saulo (WMO Secretary-General)
  • Ms. Paola Albrito (Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
  • Dr. Jarbas Barbosa (Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on video)
  • Dr. José Salazar (Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) - to be confirmed)

The dialogue panel will be composed of five panelists: 

  • Dr. Adrian Trotman (CIMH)
  • Ms. Angela Blanco (FAO, Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean)
  • Ms. Alejandra Mujica (Global Water Partnership (GWP) South America Regional Coordinator)
  • Dr. Daniel Buss (Chief of the Environmental Determinants and Climate Change Unit, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO))
  • Dr. Anna Stewart-Ibarra, (Executive Director, Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI))
