Wang Yi
Dr. Wang Yi is Director of World Meteorological Center (WMC) Beijing Operation Office at the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). He is responsible for management and coordination of WMC Beijing’s operation and activities at the national and international levels. Acting as the advanced global centres in the World Meteorological Organization Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WIPPS) network, WMC Beijing is committed to providing high-quality seamless global Numerical Weather Prediction products to WMO Members. His role also encompass project management, international cooperation and coordination, capacity development and the development of the CMA’s Cloud-based Early Warning Support System. He plays a vital role in the development and upgrade of the WMC Beijing official web-portal which provides a variety of real-time global and regional monitoring and forecasting products to assist enhancing the operational capabilities of National Hydro-Meteorological Services worldwide.
Dr. Wang Yi joined the China Meteorological Administration in 2010 as a Meteorologist after earning a PhD degree in Meteorology at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. When serving as the associate chief meteorologist in the National Meteorological Centre of China Meteorological Administration, he was responsible for the national weather analysis and forecasts, delivery of hazardous weather warnings and development of novel forecast technology and products. In 2017, he visited the Global Systems Laboratory of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in USA for one year on the ensemble forecasting application research.
He has extensive experience in international collaboration and coordination. He is the core member of the Advisory Group on the WMO Coordination Mechanism (WCM) to support humanitarian activities of the United Nations and other organizations and serves as the member of the WMO WWRP High-impact Weather Warning Value Chain Project. He has also jointly co-chaired the WIPPS Pilot Project - Multi-Model Integrated Forecasting and Application (MMIFA). He has led a series of capacity development programs including technical workshops and international training for WMO Members especially in developing countries.
