Maureen Abla Ahiataku

Ms. Maureen Abla Ahiataku is a Principal Meteorologist and External Relations Officer at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet). In her role, she drives international collaboration and strategic partnerships, managing GMet's engagement with foreign entities and representing Ghana at World Meteorological Organization (WMO) meetings. Her responsibilities encompass project management, coordination of international visits, and the strategic promotion of GMet, fostering cultural understanding and advancing international cooperation.

Ms. Ahiataku is a member of the WMO Regional Association for Africa International Advisors (INTAD) network, dedicated to strengthening international relations and cooperation. She serves as the national focal point for the GMet on WMO’s National Climate Services Information System (CSIS) and Observing Systems Capability Analysis and Review Tool (OSCAR)/Surface, contributing to enhanced climate services delivery.

Her experience at the Agency's Hydrometeorological unit includes research, specializing in rainfall variability, flood and drought analysis, forecast verification, user engagement, and citizen science. Notably, she was the Agency’s focal person for the inception phase of the Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) with the Danish Meteorological Institute and a team coordinator for Ghana’s Climate Atlas under SSC Phase 1.

Ms. Ahiataku plays a vital role in national climate initiatives. She is a member of the Greater Accra Regional Climate Change Steering Committee, overseeing the monitoring and evaluation of climate change adaptation strategy implementation. As the national focal person for the Early Warning for All (EW4All) initiative in Ghana, she spearheaded the launch and development of the EW4All roadmap. She is also a member of the Ghana Meteorological Society.

Her leadership extends to international research projects as she is GMet Lead for the ongoing Early Warning for Energy Project. She was the focal person for the Volta Flood and Drought Management project for the Agency and the WP1 lead focusing on user engagement and co-production for GMet's involvement in the GCRF African-SWIFT project. Maureen was a forecaster at the Kotoka International Airport Meteorological Office, and have expertise in Numerical Weather Prediction modelling using the WRF model.

Education: MSc in Atmospheric Science and Engineering from Ewha Womans University, South Korea. BSc in Meteorology and Climate Science from KNUST, Ghana
