Soma Senroy
Dr. Soma Sen Roy joined the India Meteorological Department in 1998 as a Meteorologist after Postgraduate studies in Physics from the University of Delhi. Following one year training in Meteorology at the Meteorological Training Institute at Pune, and further specialized training in nowcasting and short-range forecasting at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in USA and the UK Met Office, she is presently posted in the National Weather Forecasting Centre of IMD.
Her day-to-day job primarily involves operational weather forecasting. She heads the round the clock Nowcast operations- especially of thunderstorms throughout India. She is also the National level media spokesperson for India Meteorological Department. She serves as faculty for IMD Departmental refresher course trainings and also in extra-departmental training activities in Meteorology. Dr. Soma Sen Roy has a Ph.D. degree from the Vidyasagar University, Midnapore in Atmospheric Sciences. She has co-authored over 40 research publications in international peer reviewed journals as well as book chapters and guides doctoral students. Her primary field of interest is analysis and forecast of local severe storms. She loves trekking in the Himalayas and reading detective fiction.
Projects handled/handling:
- Operational implementation and maintenance of 3 stage forecasting (medium to short-range to three hour) of thunderstorms round the clock in IMD.
- Establishment of the Thunderstorm Testbed Project of Government of India
- Automation, Expansion and Improvement of Operational Nowcast and Very Short range forecast System of IMD
WMO contribution:
- Member of the task team for the document “WMO Guide for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in Support of National Multi hazard Early Warning Systems, Procedures, Coordination Mechanisms and Services Guide No. 1 – Tropical Cyclones”.
- Member of the task team to draft the Technical Regulations for Early Warning Services.
- Member of the Expert Team in Multi-hazard Early Warnings and Service Delivery Technical Guidance (ET-WSG).
