The Global Climate 2011-2020: Accelerating climate change, accelerating action

In 2010, WMO started to work on multi-year State of the Climate reports, including 10-year and 5-year timescales. The multiyear time scale allows enough time to gather enough data for retrospective analysis for long-term signals assessed on climate indicators and extreme events, including attribution studies. The first decadal report was published in 2013, covering the 2001-2010 decade, with two 5-year reports following.

This side event will now launch the next report in the series, covering 2011-2020. This timely report is another important contribution to understanding long-term changes in the state of the climate. It will highlight the growth of greenhouse gases and subsequent impacts on key indicators, including temperature, sea level rise, glacier mass and sea ice extent. Additionally, it will offer many new insights, particularly on extreme events, including attribution to anthropogenic climate change and connecting their impacts on development to the achievement of the SDGs. The launch is expected to bring greater awareness toward the need for enhanced mitigation and adaptation efforts, and to provide key insights on the importance of improved climate finance and synergistic action with the SDGs.
