Water quality is known

Surface and groundwater quality should be permanently monitored as a necessary step to ensure water quality in accordance with different requirements for society and ecosystems, and corrective actions should be applied when necessary.

The last of the eight long-term ambitions on water aims at enhancing cooperation at national, regional and global levels on water quality monitoring and water quality data exchange, as foreseen in the WMO Vision and Strategy on Hydrology

New partnerships are needed to support this ambition, including links to ongoing activities of UNEP's Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS/Water), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other relevant stakeholders.
